Event 5 to 7 p.m., dinner 7 to 9:30 p.m.
New York Yacht Club, 37 West 44th Street, NYC
In 2023, New York Yacht Club member R. Steven Tsuchiya, purchased a 67 troy ounce, coin silver, presentation cup manufactured and marked by William Gale around 1835. Engraved on this hefty trophy are several inscriptions revealing its storied past. One inscription reads, “Won by Schooner Yacht / Wave / Built for / Commodore John C. Stevens / 1832.” A second inscription specifies the victory, “In race against Sylph / Owned by J.P. Cushing, Esq. 1836.”
Tsuchiya’s research has shown that the Wave Cup was the prize of the first recorded yacht race in the United States. The Cup’s winner, Commodore John C. Stevens, went on to found the New York Yacht Club in 1844 and win the first America’s Cup race in 1851. Tsuchiya, a yachting historian, serves on the New York Yacht Club’s Fine Arts Committee, Library Committee, and the America’s Cup Committee.
Come see and learn about this newly found treasure while it is in situ at the New York Yacht Club. This special event is co-sponsored by Steven Tsuchiya and the Board of the New York Silver Society. Space is limited to 20 people. Dinner at the New York Yacht Club to follow, offered at a discounted price (approx. $100). Business casual attire; jacket and tie required for men.
